Turn off the gas to the gas unit and check how hot you can get.
Water has to reach a certain temperature to be safe to use (minimize bacteria). Therefore even water heated by the solar unit, if it is not hot enough, the gas unit will still work as the additional heating source to make sure the water temperature reaches the safe level. However this uses less gas compare to heating from cold water.
