Plan aims to stitch Eastwood town centre together
REINFORCING Rowe St and its mall as the pedestrian core, stitching the town centre together and increasing the capacity of the Glen St carpark are key proposals outlined in the draft masterplan for Eastwood Town Centre.
The plan would aim to unite Eastwood by improving pedestrian connectivity and safety on Rowe St and providing better access to the tunnel.
The east and west sides of Rowe St would be united using trees, creative lighting – such as that used in Chinatown and Llankelly Place in Kings Cross – and better streetscapes to achieve “visual continuity”.
Rowe St would be emphasised as the “eat street” of Eastwood by promoting alfresco dining, outdoor markets and more shopping opportunities.
Use of the Rowe St mall could be encouraged at night by installing three power outlets into custom-*designed furniture allowing for night markets, festivals and musical performances.
Opportunities would be explored to improve access to Eastwood Park, with expanded playground and *library facilities.
Building heights would mainly range from two to seven storeys in the town centre, with a sprinkling of eight to 12 storeys on Rutledge St between West Pde and Trelawney St.
Two-storey buildings would front Rowe St and the mall to maintain a “human scale”
Six-storey buildings would be allowed on Hillview, Coolgun and Rowe lanes, as well as in the Glen St Reserve and Lakeside Rd precincts.
The plan would aim to:
■ Highlight Rowe St mall as the heart of the town centre
■ Promote Glen St Reserve as the town park – for gatherings and recreation
Road upgrades:
■ Change Rowe St between the mall and Trelawney St to one-way traffic to the south and west
■ Change Progress Ave from one-way southbound to one-way northbound
■ Reduce cars around Hillview Lane, The Avenue, Lakeside Rd and Progress Ave intersection
Parking:
■ Partial redevelopment of the eastern portion of Glen St carpark to increase capacity from 465 to 778
■ Consider angled parking at Rydedale Rd to increase capacity
The Eastwood Chamber of Commerce has called on Ryde Council to revise the masterplan to allow 20-storey buildings in the town centre, to lure developers who could fund much-needed community facilities.
The Chamber has also called for a remodelling of the tunnel connecting West Parade and East St.
Chamber president Vic Tagg said no developer would touch Eastwood “with a barge pole” unless Ryde Council revised its masterplan for Eastwood to allow taller buildings to attract investment in the rundown town centre.
“It is simply disgraceful that the major connection between east and west Eastwood is through this unsafe and ugly tunnel,” Mr Tagg said.
The chamber and the Yuhu Group, owners of the Eastwood shopping centre, have drawn up plans to revamp Eastwood, including the dark, dank tunnel into a light and safe modern thoroughfare.
In addition to the existing ramps, they propose new stairs to East St and stairs opening into the Rowe St mall to revitalise the link between east and west Eastwood.
Mr Tagg said these sorts of upgrades to infrastructure could happen only if the masterplan encouraged developers to invest in the area, similar to the planning blueprints adopted in Top Ryde, North Ryde, Macquarie Park and Meadowbank.
Submissions on the council’s draft masterplan must be emailed by Wednesday, May 14, to cityofryde@ ryde.nsw.gov.au.

master plan 有着鲜明的特点:culture, village and entertainment.

(Rowe Street)

you are right, I don't think eastwood can provide enough parking spaces for the building and traffic will be awful, no one will go there.
