From 1 July 2014, work related self-education expenses will be more fairly targeted through an annual cap of $2,000 a person.
According to the most recent ATO data, the typical claim for formal qualifications is less than half the proposed cap at $905. For other expenses, such as conferences, seminars and workshops, including those held locally, the typical claim is only a few hundred dollars, remaining well below the cap.
The Government will consult closely with employees and employers to better target this concession while still supporting essential training.
This reform will save around $520 million over the forward estimates period.

maybe i read the treasury media release wrong, but didn't it state : "Currently employers are not liable for fringe benefits tax for education and training they provide to their employees – this treatment will be retained, unless an employee salary sacrifices to obtain these benefits. " So maybe salary sacrifices would still have the cap . That is how i read it.

It still leaves a room for employee to negotiate with employer to provide the support of education as part of remuneration arrangement other than salary sacrifice.

A very tough time for people working in Uni. With current gov cutting funds for Uni, tighting up skilled migration policy, which in turn significant reduced the number of oversea students enrollment, plus now put on cap on work related self education exp claim, I wonder what impact would these have on universities. Maybe it will increase their productivities and efficiencies .

今年把Car FBT改严格了,按这个趋势,Salary Sacrifice报学费也可能在15年会变严。
只要懂FBT的雇主一般都不乐意员工Salary Sacrifice报学费的,这不在FBT exempt的栏目下,会增加雇主的FBT。逃FBT的就不说了。

说是针对律师和医生等行业的非必要年会和论坛的豪华酒店和头等舱机票。
一般这些high flyer都有自己的practice,这些费用直接走practice的expenses了,最后这政策的结果就变成针对拿死工资的律师,医生,护士,会计和MBA求学者了。
我和同事们每年的学费都超过3000,还有在读master of tax的,如果政策不该,15年就会受影响。
