If you don't know what "G'day" or "mate" mean then it's time to learn it now!
G'day is the short hand for "Good day". It's used as a greeting. Just like hello. As you might have guessed, G'day is for saying hello during the day.
Mateship is a very important part of the Australian culture. A mate is a good friend, like a brother. As in "Bulaohu is a mate of Gandu's." Generally "mate" is used to address male only. But occasionally you hear people addressing female as "mate". They are likely to be lesbians...
So "G'day mate!" means "兄弟你好！"。
Sometimes when you can't recall who you are greeting, just say "G'day mate!".

说起这个又有一个笑话。
以前美国人来澳洲发现全澳洲的男人都叫Michael。为什么呢？因为大家见了面都是"G'day My"。当然不可能是叫My的了，可能是Mike吧？后来找了一个澳洲朋友问了才知道原来是mate。
这个mate的后面那个t发音很短很轻。

很有意思，曾看过一个DVD专门讲澳洲口音的由来，讲Good day要说的很懒，而且多用鼻音，尽量少张嘴，因为澳洲很热，苍蝇很多，嘴张得太大，苍蝇会飞进去，久而久之就形成了绵羊味的澳洲英语。

刚才和aussie徒弟聊了一会，他在New Zealand待过几年，结果他告诉我一些有趣的：
他说kiwi同样的话，他们说，G'day,bro.
如果是Aboriginal说的话，就变成了G'day, bra.

I am so scared they keep asking me “how was your weekend” “you had a nice weekend” each Monday morning so I always take the priority to raise the question first.
btw, in email my Aussie colleagues always using ARVO instead of afternoon, say “Good arvo”, “I will be seeing you in arvo”. I thought it was a short hand for “afternoon”, however ARVO still can be looked up in dictionary.

When people ask you "how's your weekend?". If you don't want to go into details, just reply "not bad" or "pretty good".
