THE financial and personal details of Australians could have been ''hoovered up'' by Google as they photographed Australian streets and the web giant may be seeking to patent the program they used to do it.
Google is under fire in North America, Europe and Australia after collecting 600GB of data from unsecured wireless internet connections while taking photographs for its map function, Street View, in as many as 30 countries.
A spokesman for Google Australia said: ''This was a mistake for which we are profoundly sorry.''
The federal Communications Minister, Stephen Conroy, said yesterday: ''If … you were doing a banking transaction or transmitting personal information, they could have hoovered it up, sucked it into their machine.''
The Australian Federal Police are investigating possible breaches of the Telecommunication Interceptions Act, while the Privacy Commissioner is carrying out a separate probe into whether Google has breached the Privacy Act.
Authorities in Canada, Germany, France and Spain are also investigating Google's actions.
A Google software engineer is being investigated by the company for creating the ''rogue code'' that collected the data, its chief executive, Eric Schmidt, said last week.
However, a class-action lawsuit being lodged in the US does not accept that a single engineer was to blame. A document tendered in that lawsuit states that Google not only purposefully created technology to gather wireless data, but is also seeking to patent that same technology. Google has denied the claim.
