我们谴责Coddington在英文媒体不负责任的种族言论

Letters to the editor and opinion pieces are a good way of providing feedback to the magazine, but for me, the key issue here is that of editorial responsibility. To that end, I intend to write to North & South with a formal letter of complaint, with a request that the magazine publish - from the editor's pen - an unequivocal acknowledgement that the decision to publish the piece, and the article itself, were below the journalistic standard expected of a national news and current affairs magazine. To elaborate, I intend to request that the editor admit that: - the article contained intellectually dishonest misuse of statistics in order to misrepresent the scale of an 'Asian crime' wave- that the article's journalistic purpose to raise issues of public interest and provoke debate was not executed in good faith, and was indistinguishable from an intent to vilify and offend.- that the article was biased and intentionally unbalanced - that the article suggested that Asian New Zealanders were not New Zealanders - that the article contained unacceptable and uncritical use of racial slurs including "Asiatic" and "Asian menace." In the letter of complaint, I will note that if the editor does not provide a direct editorial acknowledgement of these issues in the following issue, that I will take the complaint to the Press Council. If a complaint is upheld or partially upheld by the Press Council, the decision must be published in full, or if partially upheld, in summary, in the magazine. In the previous relevant example, the East & Bays Courier 'Inv-Asian' article of 1993, the Press Council partially upheld the complaint.
