Opposition may scrap myki, says Baillieu

Opposition Leader Ted Baillieu has said he may scrap myki if his party wins government in November.
Today marks five years since the Government signed the contract to deliver myki by March 1, 2007.
It is now three years late and its budget has blown out to $1.35 billion.
Asked this morning if the opposition would scrap myki if it won government, Mr Baillieu said: “We are now looking at our legal options.”
Preferred options for the $5 billion WestLink freeway have been announced this morning.
Mr Baillieu said this morning that the government's announcement today on WestLink was empty rhetoric.
“There is no funding available. They have spent a fortune examining it, and they have had years to deal with it but they have done nothing.”
A spokesman for Public Transport Minister Martin Pakula said ''good progress" was being made on the troubled smartcard system.
“Myki is operating on regional buses and Melbourne’s trains. Good progress is being made to get it operating on Melbourne’s trams and buses too,” the spokesman said.
"If they scrap Myki, what will they do with Metcard?"
Hundreds of complaints about myki have flooded into the Public Transport Ombudsman, a body set up by Victorian train, tram and bus operators to deal with complaints from Victorian commuters.
Figures released to the state opposition last month show ticket revenue on regional buses has fallen since myki was introduced.
The $1.35 billion myki card, three years late and $350 million over budget, was introduced on buses in six regional Victorian cities from late 2008. It is also running on Melbourne's trains, but is not yet valid on the city's trams and buses.
The government will not say when myki will be fully operational. Last year, problems with myki malfunctioning on regional buses led to drivers often waving passengers on board without checking their tickets.
The figures released under freedom of information to opposition transport spokesman Terry Mulder showed revenue on regional buses fell from $5.7 million in 2008 to $5.6 million in 2009. This small drop came despite a jump in numbers catching the bus in towns with myki.
