Armed police raid Chaouk house in Melbourne's west

Police have dug up the front garden of a home in Melbourne’s west this morning following a dawn raid by heavily armed police investigating a series of shootings in the area.
Search-and-rescue teams carrying metal detectors and shovels have also entered the two-storey brick home on Geelong Road in Brooklyn, that was the scene of the fatal police shooting of Mohamed Chaouk in 2005.
More than 30 police officers, including members of the elite Special Operations Group, raided the property just before 7am today.
It was one of a number of dawn raids on houses in Brooklyn and Tarneit in Melbourne’s west this morning by the Santiago Taskforce, formed to investigate non-fatal shootings in the northern and western suburbs.
A Victoria Police spokesman said the raids began about 6am in Brooklyn and Tarneit, and all properties were entered without incident.
One of those raids was at a house on the corner of Geelong Road and Conifer Avenue, where Mr Chaouk, 30, was shot dead by a Victoria Police Special Operations Group officer during a dawn raid on April 5, 2005.
The officer shot Mr Chaouk in the chest and abdomen after he allegedly struck the officer’s wrist with a blunt samurai sword.
A Victoria Police spokesman said officers were expected to remain at the house for several hours.
Earlier police searched what appears to be an upstairs bedroom, while a number of items have been removed from the residence.
A middle-aged man briefly walked outside the house and spoke to police officers about 8am.
Witnesses said police dogs were also sweeping through the house, while five police vans, about 10 police cars and an armoured police vehicle were parked in the street.
A large crowd of onlookers has also gathered on the street, which is opposite a light industrial estate.
Family members inside the house are peeking out at the heavy police presence from behind curtains.
During the raid police blocked a stretch of Geelong Road between Grieve Parade and Millers Road for nearly an hour, causing traffic chaos in the area.
Police have not yet provided details of the other raids, only saying that reports that shots had been fired were incorrect.
An inquest into Mr Chaouk’s death in April this year was told the Chaouk house was stormed by police in 2005 after a six-month investigation into alleged criminal activity by the family and their associates.
The inquest was told police had intelligence that some members were known to allegedly carry guns.
The 2005 raid came as police believed there was a "real danger" to the safety of certain individuals if the members continued their alleged activities unhindered.
Police from the Santiago Taskforce, Special Operations Group, Operational Response Unit and local police were involved in today’s raids.
