经常听到有人说Far out man！ 就是Get out of here 或 jesus christ！的意思

I think it can be either too good or too bad.
Far out mate could mean Fxxxing good mate.
Far out! Fxxxing something something.... something extremely good or bad. That is how I use them anyway, save me from swearing. A bit like Ssss...sugar, instead of Shit.
