"Look at the big picture" is common and proper, however "look outside the box" might not be as popular as "think outside the square" or "think outside the square you live in".

My understanding is:
Look at the big picture = 看全局
think outside of the box = 开拓思路，不要被条条框框给圈住了。

Both box and square are used frequently to my knowledge.
Maybe US use square more. Aussies use box more.
