ABOUT 80 schools have asked the agency responsible for the My School website to alter the statements they submitted about themselves after seeing how other schools described themselves.
A spokeswoman for the Australian Curriculum, Assessment and Reporting Authority, which runs the site, said the 200-word profile statements were collected several months ago and it was always planned to give schools the opportunity to update them.
''School principals have changed in many schools since last year and the new principal has a right to refine the statement,'' the spokeswoman said.
Other schools had wished to include data in their profiles that was not collected nationally such as the proportion of students who went on to university or other training.
''In the coming weeks all schools will be given the opportunity to update their statements,'' the spokeswoman said. This process would occur twice a year, she said.
Schools were allowed to say anything they liked about themselves in their profile statements, with site producers only correcting typographical errors and errors of grammar and spelling.
Since the site was launched a week ago, it has attracted 1.5 million visitors, and more than 80 million page views.
Meanwhile, the Victorian Education Department has been accused of pressuring schools to ''teach to the test'' in a bid to lift their performance on the My School website after it sent a memo urging principals to prioritise national testing in May.
Teachers have been told to ''explicitly teach for NAPLAN'' and to practise using test terminology and questions on a daily basis. In a memo sent to all principals in the Loddon Mallee region in north-west Victoria two days before the launch of the controversial website, the Victorian Education Department said regional officials would target literacy and numeracy to raise the profile of national testing.
Principals should ''privilege the testing as an event of significance'' and provide extra help to students who were capable of making significant improvement, it said.
The leaked memo has reignited claims that the launch of the My School website places teachers and state governments under added pressure to lift test results, with one principal yesterday labelling it ''a sign of things to come''.
The National Assessment Program for Literacy and Numeracy (NAPLAN) tests were introduced in 2008 and are the only measure of academic performance used on the federal government's My School website.
Based on tests in reading, writing, language convention and numeracy, compliance with NAPLAN is tied to federal funding agreements with the states.
