peckish: English slang and colloquialisms used in the United Kingdom
Peckish means hungry. The word has been standard English for the past century but began life as criminal slang. Its first recorded use is
1714 A. Smith Lives of the Most Noted Highway-men, etc.: Somewhat Peckish, that is, Hungry.
The word comes from the earlier peck, meaning food which is based on the image of a bird that pecks at grain and the like. It is one of the earliest of all recorded slang terms and first appears in a glossary of criminal language published in 1566.
