Observations from parents and teachers point to the use of Singlish in the schools today as being
more widespread than it was five years ago [1994].…In many schools, Singlish is the preferred
language of interaction among students.…While Singlish might be the preferred mode when they
interact with their peers informally, they are able to use Standard English in formal situations and
when speaking with their teachers.

*****, can nah?
- Go dinner lah, can?
- Can!
- Ah, then go bed, can or not?
- Cannot.
- Why cannot?
- Cannot.
评论
can nah? - can you or can't you? (expecting a 'yes')
can lah. - yes/ok.
can leh. - yes, of course.
can loh. - yes, i think so.
can hah? - (i don't know, and) are you sure?
can hoh. - you are sure then...
can meh? - (i doubt so, and) are you sure?

people talk to their parents in Chinese, but English is still their offical language.

can nih mah leh geh bih deh!
You don't like that meh?
And then how many rooms ah?
I don't know how to explain this lah.
It's okay lah.
If you don't work, then you die-die lor!
Then hor, he came out of the house.
This one is better hor.
