THIRTY people died during police pursuits or in other contact with police or while in jail last year.
While the number of people who have died in custody has fallen slightly on previous years, those who died in police operations rose from 10 in 2008 to 18 last year, the highest since 2004. Police said the rise did not represent a trend.
The cases last year included the death of the toddler Skye Sassine during a police pursuit on New Year's Eve, and the death of a 24-year-old mentally ill man, Elijah Holcombe, shot by police in Armidale.
The figures are in a report by the State Coroner. The coroner is still to review the action of police and prison authorities and determine the official cause of death for those who died last year.
Mr Holcombe's mother, Tracey, said yesterday that she believed police needed more training for dealing with people with a mental illness.
The report includes details of cases the coroner determined last year, including those of 10 people who were mentally ill, or suicidal. Four of them killed themselves in prison even though authorities were aware of their suicidal thoughts.
The case of one man, Glen Kennedy, who fell to his death from a balcony in South Coogee in 2007 after police negotiators had tried to stop him, prompted the coroner to recommend that a police training program devised 10 years earlier be made a mandatory education scheme.
Police said in a statement they were ''committed to minimising these incidents'' and would assess any recommendations made by the coroner.
''Police dedicate their lives to keeping the community safe.''
