How to best answer Ansoff Product Market Matrix for Case 3?
Lavazza is trying to achieve growth in all 3 matrix: Market Development, Product Development and Diversification
then give examples to support?

A bit confused here after discussion with my study group.
If the exam quesiton is about the current strategy that Lavazza is supposed to or has been following, we reckon it should be a combination of market penetration (maitaining position in the existing market) and market development (expansion into new customer and geographic segments).
BUT, if the question asks "what strategy Lavazza has been following so far?", it should cover all the three (MP+MD+PD)including "product development" (e.g. capsule business, coffee machines)
We kinda feel diversification is a bit hard to justify here in the case……Lavazza has been developing coffee-related businesses, e.g. blends of coffee, coffee capsule business, coffee chains....
It's quite different to the GE's case in study guide: GE's business covers a wide range of industries of distinctive natures - healthcare, infrastructure, media, utilities and etc....
请问大家怎么看?

你的分析有道理。但是我现在会担心,考试的时候会出类似于scenario analysis的题目。my online leaning关于鸡的case,就有这类的题目,我在想,考试时,会不会提及某些特殊的情况,你需要选择哪种strategy. 如果这样考的话,题目会变得很活。既要理解ansoff的理论,又可能会牵扯到rumelt's strategic choice.
我想请问,有谁清楚过去的考试的出题方式,有没有带scenario分析的题目。

Regarding Diversification, my view is that: Diversification can be moving into new products and new markets at the same time. This can be related or unrelated to current activities.
In the case for Lavazza, the expansion into the US via acquisition / partnership with Green Mountain - launching new capsule coffee machine can be seen as diversification.

什么scenario analysis? 你是说像鸡店一样的那样的给你几个不同的情况分析?
但是instructor已经说过肯定没有新的material再给出来,只是based on pre-seen information.
考试应该没有那么难吧。。。。

I have used the retail coffee chains expansion as examples for market development! ie taking existing products into new markets into different countries...
I am suggesting that the partnership with Green Mountain - new capsule coffee making "machine" as the new product and US as its new market....for diversification?

Figure 2 for this case listed out the key historical milestones of Lavazza from 1895 - 2011.
Is this just giving us an overview of the company's success? or are we meant to somehow analyse this?

2. also, seems to me there some Aus mkt figures pop up somewhere , any hints/ ??
3.pg14, the four Laz factories ,wat are they referring for ?BSC-internal process ?
4.no competitiors indicated here, so no need to address strategic capabilities, key s/factors lo ?
5. diversification, methinks it all coffee-related biz development , so no further action in here .

Product development does not include incremental improvements. i thought Lavazza has already got its existing product lines for capsule coffee machines. isn't the partnership with GM some sort of market development (in to the US market)?
How do you reckon? i'm confused....
