The $2 coin was first introduced on 20 June 1988. Planning for a $2 coin commenced around the same time as that for the $1 coin. Like the $1 coin, the $2 coin replaced the note of the same denomination which had a short service life through high use.
The size of the $2 was determined after consideration of the needs of the visually impaired community, security considerations, a desire to avoid shaped coins, practical limitations to the diameter and thickness of coins, and to allow for future expansion of Australia's circulating coin array. When introduced, it was necessary to accommodate this new coin with seven existing denominations.

Best Answer: a) Nobody thought ahead enough to realise that the need for a second gold coin (and probably a third - the $5) would occur. Thus they created the dollar as if it would be the only one.
b) Realising that they had blundered yet again - the creators figured that, since the 50c piece was larger than the dollar - why not keep the graduation in size going by making the two dollar coin smaller than the dollar.
c) What the hell will they do with a $5 coin - make it the size of a pinhead - that would make it perfect for images of their heads!
Grappler answer - declare this to be Day Zero - new coins will be introduced a specified time in advance for exchange - from Day Zero + X existing two dollar coins still in circulation will be worth $1, and all $1coins still in circulation will be worth $2, and a new $5 will be introduced which is larger again than the now larger $2.

造币厂的说法是，1967年澳币改革时，当年没想到会出2刀的硬币，后来做的时候发现再做出比1刀大的硬币不太现实，就干脆做小了

含银多不耐磨，圆的那个大小还行，现在的好像是13.5g，18枚就半斤了。

上边说少了，是15.55g一枚，20个一轴，5轴装袋子就1.5kg甩起来就可以当成小武器了。

我觉得很应该把50C换材料做，有大又厚，有那么四五个钱包就塞的鼓鼓囊囊的了。蛮好学习一下新西兰，几年前把硬币材料都换成轻的也改小size了
