In Australia, 000 is the primary emergency contact number from all telephones: landline, mobile and public pay phones (no money is required at a public pay phone to make this 000 call). 000 should always remain the primary emergency contact number when requiring ambulance, fire brigade or police.
When calling 000 the first piece of information the operator wants to know is what emergency service you require: "fire, ambulance or police". The operator may request which state or territory you are call from. If requiring more than one emergency service, request the most urgent as the ambulance service will notify police and/or fire brigade if required. The operator will then connect you to the emergency service you require – this may take a few seconds, so stay on the line until answered by the appropriate operator requested.
Other essential information requested by the operator includes:
What is the exact location of the incident – including nearest intersection, street name, suburb, city or town?
What is the phone number from which you are calling?
Caller's name?
What has happened?
How many casualties?
Condition of the casualty(s)?
Stay calm and respond clearly. The emergency services operator will provide you with first aid instructions and dispatch the ambulance and paramedics. Listen carefully to their questions and instructions. DO NOT hang-up until you are told to do so or the operator hangs up first.
If there are bystanders, get them to call for an ambulance. Ensure the bystander confirms with you that the call has been made and that the exact location has been given. Ensure the bystander returns to you as they can assist you in providing first aid.
If you are on your own, quickly determine how long it would take to leave the casualty, make a call and return to the casualty. The specific circumstances surrounding the situation will determine whether you leave the casualty or commence first aid (possibly CPR) and shout for help. You may place your mobile phone on 'speaker phone' and talk to the operator whilst performing first aid or CPR.
Remember that once the operator has confirmed the address, the ambulance is on its way. Therefore, do not be concerned about how long the conversation takes with the emergency services operator. The operator is well-trained and will guide you through all steps if required.
Alternative Ways to Call for Help:
112 is the international number that can be dialled from any mobile any where in the world with GSM coverage.
112 has a feature so that it can be dialled from any network coverage area. For example, if your mobile phone carrier is out of coverage, then it will be picked up by another network where there is coverage. 112 can be used even if there is no SIM card in the phone. The frequency initiated by dialling 112 is built into the 'hardware' of the phone and functions irrespective of the network carrier. Please note that there must be power to the phone to initiate this call. 112 is particularly handy to remember if travelling overseas, or if the 000 number fails to reach an operator from a mobile phone. Note: 112 cannot be used on a landline – 000 is the only number to call from landlines.
106 is the text-based Emergency Call Service for people with people who are Deaf or have a hearing or speech impairment. This service operates using a teletypewriter (TTY) and does NOT accept voice calls or SMS messages
Internet voice over technology such as VOIP (Voice Over Internet Protocol) may not accept 000 as an emergency call number. Please refer to your instruction booklet when setting up VOIP to ensure that the set-up acknowledges 000 as an emergency number.
Workplace may have an internal emergency number. This should be clearly displayed near the phone and all employees and visitors should be inducted in its use. Freeways and major roads have emergency phones marked by blue signs. These signs have arrows pointing in the direction of the nearest phone. These phones are linked to control centres, allowing emergency services to pinpoint the position of the accident or emergency.
In remote areas, other means of contacting emergency services may include: satellite phones, two way radios, HF/VHF radio, flags, e-mail, flares, and Personal Locator Beacons (EPIRBS).
