The fifth-generation Honda Legend has broken cover in Japan ahead of its official launch on January 22.
The Japanese domestic market Legend – essentially a rebadged version of the Acura RLX sold in North America since 2013 – introduces a complex all-wheel-drive hybrid powertrain and world-first safety technology.
The long-awaited luxury flagship sedan arrives more than 10 years after the launch of the previous fourth-generation Legend and two years after its discontinuation.
Despite being offered in Australia for the past 30 years (with the exception of a gap between models in 2005) and the new-generation car being available in right-hand drive, Honda Australia says it has no plans to sell the fifth-gen Legend on our shores given the low demand for the fourth-gen model.

The 2015 Honda Legend features Honda’s Sport Hybrid SH-AWD (Super Handling All-Wheel Drive) powertrain, which teams a 3.5-litre V6 petrol engine with three electric motors (one front, two rear), a lithium-ion battery pack, and a seven-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission. Combined power and torque outputs are rated at 280kW and 510Nm – easily eclipsing the old Legend’s 226kW/370Nm 3.7-litre V6.
The new model is 4982mm long, 1890mm wide, 1465mm tall and rides on a 2850mm wheelbase, making it 9mm longer, 43mm wider and 12mm taller than its predecessor, as well as 51mm longer between the wheels.
Late last month, the car maker confirmed the 2015 Legend would feature an upgraded version of the Honda Sensing advanced driver assist system that debuted in the 2015 CR-V.
Honda Sensing introduces the claimed world-first pedestrian collision mitigation steering system, which uses a front-mounted radar and camera to detect pedestrians and the boundary line on the side of the road and autonomously steer the vehicle safely away from pedestrians if it predicts a potential collision.
Other features of the safety suite include emergency steering, collision mitigation braking, lane keep assist, lead car departure notification, traffic sign recognition, and false start prevention.
