According to Honda, the new Civic will have “unmatched performance compared to all previous Type R cars, including Civic, Integra, Accord and NSX.” Yes, this little front-wheel-drive five-door is said to perform even better than the NSX Type R
the Civic Type R has always boasted a high-revving four-cylinder engine, though with natural aspiration, it never was able to break the 200-hp barrier. This time around, Honda ain’t messing around: as has been widely expected, Honda has added a turbocharger to the 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine to supplement Honda’s latest i-VTEC technology, resulting in over 276 hp, according to Honda along with a still-undisclosed amount of torque. Redline is down to 7,000 rpm, considerably lower than the stratospheric redlines of previous Civic Type Rs, but it’s still pretty impressive for a turbocharged mill that passes Euro 6 emissions standards.
If this sounds like a recipe for Herculean torque steer, know that Honda has developed what it calls a “steer axis” front suspension that includes two supporting “king pins.” No other details were provided on this system, but if it works as promised, we wouldn’t be surprised to see Honda apply it to other models in the future, possibly even the U.S. market Civic Si.
As ever, a six-speed manual is tasked with gear shifting to “maximize driving enjoyment,” and because “the manual transmission allows the drivers to select the gear they want,” says Suehiro Hasshi, Large Project Leader for the Civic Type R at Honda R&D. Other new firsts appearing in this iteration of the Type R are adaptive shocks with four settings as well as a new “+R” button located to the side of the steering wheel that activates a “+R” mode in which throttle response is sharpened, torque delivery is remapped “to a more aggressive and performance-focused setting,” and the steering becomes more responsive.
