The family of a Melbourne woman killed when her car appeared to suddenly lose power on a freeway has won the right to an independent review of the coronial inquest into her death.

Melissa Ryan, 32, was killed on Melbourne's Monash Freeway in January 2011 when her Volkswagen Golf was hit from behind by a truck.

The truck driver told last year's inquest into her death that Ms Ryan's car stopped suddenly with no brake lights.

Reports on the inquest triggered an extraordinary public response, with hundreds of VW owners complaining about power loss in their cars.

The coroner received information about the complaints, but said advice from the Department of Infrastructure and Transport did not point to systemic problems with the cars.

Coroner Heather Spooner, who has since retired, handed down an open finding but relied heavily on the view of one police officer that Ms Ryan was distracted because she was speaking on her hands-free mobile phone.

Ms Ryan's family has now won the right to have the inquest independently reviewed. 

Her stepfather Phil O'Donnell has put together a new brief of evidence that the family believes should be considered.

"There was just so many issues from the inquest that we found were confusing and left things up in the air," Mr O'Donnell told the ABC.

"One of them was that it was an adverse finding on Melissa with her mobile phone and then so much information has come up later that we think needs to be tested."

Mr O'Donnell says when the coronial hearing took place, they were not aware other VW drivers had reported power loss issues with their cars.

The stories of those drivers only came to light after the media coverage of the inquest.

Family asked for review in light of 'new data'
Mr O'Donnell says the family has asked for a review in light of the "new data" on VW problems that has been obtained since the hearing finished.

"Volkswagen declare to the coroner they had no knowledge of prior problems with their cars and we believe that there is a fair amount of data that indicates otherwise," he said.

"Again you've got to check the models you've got to check on manual and petrol (cars) but they should be tested.

"If official consumer bodies were writing to Volkswagen six months to prior to the inquest about 124 official complaints about Golf and Polo vehicles representing a systemic problem, we think that is data that is new data that should be considered by the coroner."

Part of the family's brief they have written as part of their review request is more than a dozen statutory declarations from VW drivers who say they experienced sudden power loss in their cars.

Mr O'Donnell says more than 300 people have reported problems.

Ms Ryan's mother Liz O'Donnell says the family is prepared for the fact that they may never find the answer to what happened to Melissa's car.

"We're giving it our best shot and just hoping that if there is a problem, then let's find out what it is so people out there are aware of it and can drive safely," Mrs O'Donnell told the ABC.

Ms Ryan's fiancé Wayne Belford says her car was regularly serviced and had close to a full tank of petrol at the time of the accident.

"From what I can see with all the anecdotal evidence and the witness statements we've collected, the common theme comes up the freeway was clear, cars were pretty much doing the speed limit, there was no blockages in the freeway in front," he said.

"Conditions were fine, visibility was clear, no warning lights from Mel's car.

"It stopped, the truck driver didn't even have time to get on the horn before impact, so you look at those things and they all weigh up to the fact that something's happened there."

Volkswagen says inquest was 'thorough'
Volkswagen will not comment on the review and says its existing statement about the inquest stands.

In November last year the company described the inquest as "thorough".

"Volkswagen Group Australia acknowledges the coroner's findings that the vehicle did not contribute to the cause of the accident," it said.

"Volkswagen Group Australia repeated this position throughout the investigation despite a number of reports which tried to link the tragic accident with a completely unrelated recall matter."

Last year, Volkswagen recalled more than 30,000 Volkswagen cars with direct shift gearboxes, which are automatic.

The recall did not cover models the same as Melissa Ryan's car, which was a manual.

補充:1.這台是手動版golf,不在官方DSG召回列表裏面
2.女死者在發生車禍前一刻一直在通過藍牙設備打電話。
3.從跟在golf後面的大卡車司機給出的敘述來看,女死者的車子是突然停下的,剎車燈、轉向燈都沒亮。由於狀況發生得太快,卡車司機連喇叭都沒來得及按下便撞上Golf。導致golf女司機死亡。

如果是突然停下的,连刹车灯都没亮,说明真是车子有问题

我之前的那辆奥迪A3 7档DSG 平时买买菜跑了5W公里
无故在马路上跳档2次 档的灯一直闪 加油不走车 从新打火就好了
召回以后又出现了一次 果断卖了
但是至少证明一下不漏水 不烧机油

再次PS一下 大众不知道啊 奥迪A3 A4的内饰塑料3 4年以后就很脆啊 手套箱 扶手箱这些开关卡头特别容易断 不知道是这批车的问题还是都这样 我自己拆过一次内饰贴碳纤维贴纸 奥迪做工严丝合缝 比斯巴鲁强太多了 但是确实比不上凌志

最后PS: 如果有合心的车 我还是会选奥迪的 没偏见

也可能是挂错档直接熄火了吧

在行驶中随便怎么挂档都不会熄火。相反,熄火的车如能让它跑起来就能发动。

退一万步,熄火也不至于导致突然停下,猜想是某传动部件出了问题,卡顿了。

悲剧的是,手动版少出问题,可能找不到别的案例作为支持。

而DSG案例很多,可以互为参照。可笑的是VW当时还说没听说这事,中美市场已经闹腾多久了。

额,我是没试过,好久没开手动车了……总觉得要是硬往里挂的话应该会打齿吧

那个车好像是带涡轮的,记得谁说过涡轮故障也会导致车辆突然失速

另外论坛上一个土豪说过带涡轮的车开着感觉累

所以我还是倾向于买大排量NA发动机的车,可靠,动力呼之即来,也比较线性

国内有一段时间大众的某个型号车行驶中突然熄火好像闹得也挺凶的,后来查出来时一个什么线圈还是一个线束缺欠导致的,总之大众的质量可靠性和一致性方面是有点缺火候

一看就是没开过手挡的,手动挡正常行驶中挂倒档会有声音提示的,没等挂进去呢齿轮早就打得山响了
