关于为什么要学习圆盘钟表?
事情的起因是我在Reddit上发了一条,然后有个美国人跑出来问:为什么要学看传统钟呢?有什么意义?
然后另一个美国人跳出来回应他,说了一些我从未想过的这些意义:
Dealing with analog clocks is an entry point for multiplication, division, and scale conversions, as well as dealing with systems that don''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''t follow the rules of Base 10 number systems or converting between two systems (which, to be fair, is a concept that will be baking in their head until late middle school or early high school). It also reinforces several principles of number sense, visualization, and factions. It comports with how we normally learn the names of numbers in English (1-12 have special names, but above 13 you can usually find a "trick"). Also consider the knock-on effects of being able to visualize time passage and it''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''s applications toward prioritization, time management, and estimation.
Making it easy to spout off the time by reading the digits in order isn''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''t helpful for most of these. "Reading" a clock is the bare minimum you get from digital. It doesn''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''t help you understand how long it takes to get somewhere and when we need to leave. You can teach the equations, but you can also let them visualize the changes to the clock in analog and make calculations that way. All in all, teaching these things is simply teaching flexibility.
But let''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''s be honest here... everyone is going to have to collectively decide analog clocks are useless at the same time before it''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''s not an embarrassment to not be capable of reading them. And then, why not just change the whole clock system to be Base 10 already. (I''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''m an IT professional, and I know EXACTLY why we don''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''t want to change that...)
