Selective high schools: record number compete for places

A record number of NSW children sat for the selective schools placement test on Thursday: 13,930 children are in contention for 4188 spots.
They grappled with questions about codes, patterns, percentages and the meaning of words in the exam which tests mathematics, general ability, reading and writing.
There were smiles of relief outside Sydney Secondary College, Leichhardt Campus, which was the test centre for nine schools in Sydney's inner west.
Year 6 students from Annandale Public School found the 2½-hour exam challenging but fair.
Evie Hickson, of Leichhardt, found the general ability section the hardest but described doing the exam as a good experience.
Her friend Sarah Brine, of Annandale, agreed that the general ability component was the most challenging part of the test.
''It was stressful, knowing that you had a time limit,'' she said.
''You had to be very quick in the general ability part because you had to answer 60 questions in 40 minutes and some of the questions were quite hard to work out.''
Daniel Jones, from Annandale, found the mathematics section the trickiest, but sailed through reading.
''I liked the reading the most. I used a lot of descriptive language so I probably aced it,'' he said.
Families will find out in July whether or not they have been accepted into one of the state's 47 fully or partially selective public schools.
Competition for the 4188 places has grown in recent years, selective government schools comprising seven of the 10 top-performing schools in last year's HSC.

我儿子同学的妈（白）是老师，她说她家大女喜专研要求试精英考，回来说英文没啥，数学有难度 ，那丫头不喜数学，但成绩还是班机第一的:。

精英中学：超记录人数角逐派位
超记录人数的NSW的孩子参加了周四的精英中学考试：１３９３０个孩子竞争４１８８个派位。
在考试包括数学，GA，阅读和写作中，他们涉及问题的内容有解码，图形，百分率和词义解释。
在Sydney Secondary College, Leichhardt 校园外，看到有舒心的笑容。这个考场是为在Sydney内西区的９个学校而设的。
来自Annandale小学的６年级学生发现２个半小时的考试有挑战性但也公平。
Leichhardt的Evie Hickson发觉GA部分最难但是一次很好的经历。
她的朋友，AnnandalE的Sarah Brine也觉得GA是整个考试中最具挑战的部分。她说：＂很紧张，尤其是知道有时间限制的情况下＂。＂在GA部分，你必须要非常快。因为你要在４０分钟内答６０道题，而且有的问题非常难解＂。
Annandale的Daniel Jones则感觉数学最难缠，但阅读简单。＂我最喜欢阅读部分，我用了许多描述性语言，所以我可能做得很好＂。
参加考试家庭会在７月获知能否在全州４７个全或半精英中学取得派位。
近年来，角逐４１８８个派位的竞争不断增长。公立精英中学囊括了在去年１０个具有顶尖HSC成绩中学中的７个。

英文倒是长期的努力，突击不出来；但相信老萨也难不倒华人孩子。。以虎妈牛爸的重视，不远将来，SSU大概要想新招对付这帮小孩子了。。

其实Local的英文水平是很不错的，当时女儿小学6年级的西人同学，考试回来，都说英文不难，数学和GA难。现在在读的精英中学里，更明显了，那些西人绝大部分都是英文好，因为他们平时爱看书，数学就不怎么行了。所以，华人通过补课，虽然在英文考试上取得了好分数，但是英文的真实水平其实并不是那么高。

我儿子现在三年级，他老师说，啥功课都没有阅读了重要，不做其它功课可以，不能不看书。其实很多白孩子也不喜欢阅读，更喜欢体育，真喜欢阅读的孩子功课一般都不错。

在澳洲长大的小孩能看懂多少中文呢， 我家的不识几个字啊。 三年级， 看的都是 6-9 年级的书。 中文在学， 可惜只有幼儿园水平。
