ANXIOUS pregnant mothers are trying to book their unborn children into Melbourne private schools to beat decade-long waiting lists.
School administrators have told the Sunday Herald Sun they are regularly contacted by heavily pregnant mothers trying to enrol their unborn children.
Trinity Grammar School deputy headmaster Rohan Brown confirmed positions at independent schools were more in demand and warned parents to enrol children early. "You don't need to book in at birth but I believe you really want to confirm your intention eight to nine years out from year seven," Mr Brown said."If you make the decision three or four years before, you are unlikely to get in. Don't leave the decision to the last minute." More than 2600 children are already on the waiting list for Kew school, despite the $23,516 annual price tag.This includes 61 children on the waiting list for 2024. More than $260,000 has been collected in non-refundable fees to join the list.
Another school told the Sunday Herald Sun the waiting lists were "astronomically long" at both co-educational and single-sex institutions around the state.
Since 2001 the number of children attending independent schools has jumped 35 per cent. One third of Australian children are now schooled privately, according to Australian Bureau of Statistics figures released last month.
The trend towards private education could be hurting Victorian families who are going bankrupt in a bid to get their kids the best education. In July 2011 it was revealed at least 24 families had been legally pursued by private schools in the past two years for unpaid fees. One parent owing just $6500 was forced to sell all the family's assets after Methodist Ladies College sued him in the Federal Court.
Wesley College has been the most aggressive school over the period, launching nine bankruptcy actions and bankrupting seven parents.
The school was owed $312,459, including $78,295 from one family.
