This is an Attention experiment my class did Term 2. Did you miss the gorilla? Or did you spot it right away? The video was made by a couple of University students, who soon became famous by posting their experiments online. The test is to see if peoples' focus is only concentrated on one thing or can focus on 2-3 at the same time. In my class, only about 5 students' could spot two things at once. Most of us didn't see anything change. The video shows how we can entirely focus our attention to one thing, that we forget or block out our surroundings. The makers of this video did many other experiements as well, showing that we often miss events that occur when we are distracted by something else. Espcially when you are looking for something, or watching something very closely. The University students, Christopher Chabris and his collegue, Daniel Simons met at Harvard University in 1997, where they began to work together on their researches. In 2004 they received the Ig Nobel Prize in Psychology, they were awarded for "achievements that first make people laugh, and then make them think," for the experiment that inspired The Invisible Gorilla. Soon many other experiments were conducted, and became famous.
After watching this, my class decided to create our own. Somebody came in to do something silly, whilst some other students passed the balll, just like the video shown. We showed it to some of our classmates (who didn't know the trick yet), and most of them failed to find out the person doing something silly. Although about 3-4 did see. For the people that watch this, 50% of them will fail.
