【The ABC of lessons in literacy】

.TEACHERS at Blaxcell Street Public School in Granville have big language challenges to overcome when teaching English to their students.
''Ninety-seven per cent of our students are from non-English-speaking backgrounds and come to school with zero English spoken at home. Many have no English books at home,'' deputy principal Justin Caban said.
So, in the past two years, staff have been ''saturating'' students with literature to improve their comprehension, and the results have begun to show.
''The Premier's Reading Challenge has been a huge part of this,'' Mr Caban said. ''We had 45 per cent of students go from being a year behind in their reading and comprehension to be in the expected range of learning.''
As a way of rewarding students for their efforts, ABC broadcaster Adam Spencer and Don Grover from Dymocks Children's Charities visited the school, with Mr Grover donating $5000 worth of books to the school library.
Selim Karakus, 11, who is in year 6, said students had benefited from an increased focus on reading. ''We are learning more and learning faster than we used to. It has given us motivation to read more books.''
The Premier's Reading Challenge is a NSW government initiative with principal partner Dymocks Children's Charities, supporting partner OPSM and media partner The Sun-Herald. Buy a Premier's Reading Challenge Sun-Herald subscription for $30 and Fairfax Media will donate $10 to your child's school.
