The Tasmanian teachers union has been ordered to lift its ban on the national literacy and numeracy tests.
The union joined a national ban on administering the NAPLAN tests, because it opposes using the results to form tables measuring a school's performance.
The Education Department took the dispute to the Tasmanian Industrial Commission, which today ruled it is in the public interest for the tests to go ahead.
Leanne Wright from the Education Union says her group will appeal against the decision.
"This is completely up to Julia Gillard," she said.
"We both agree that league tables are not good for education, we both agree that the NAPLAN testing is okay, she just needs to take steps to prevent the misuse of the data."

Nice wording indeed:
League tables are unfair and destructive, and we all have a professional responsibility to say so. But we tackle league tables with argument, explanation and better information, not by denying our students, their families and you the diagnostic benefits of the 2010 NAPLAN.
