学校老师对于学生的鼓励和激励一直是大家对于澳洲教育津津乐道的部分,但是在澳洲对此也不是只有一种声音,所谓如何平衡挫折教育和鼓励教育一直是澳洲教育界争论的焦点之一。
SMH的记者Anna Patty今天有一个报道值得一读。
公立小学将会继续给学生的学业成绩单(school report)上以A到E评级来避免一个直截了当的“不及格”,但是校长们认为现在是时候放弃虚假的表扬并给予学生一个对其能力更现实的评价。
NSW Secondary Principals Council的主席Jim McAlpine说,学校应该表扬那些在各方面取得了好成绩的学生(''achieve great things'')。
如果学生们没有取得了他们应该取得的成绩时,没有理由给他们一个虚假的表扬。学生们需要知道他们只有在取得成绩是才会有奖励。
联邦教育部长Julia Gillard说,有时候的确很难,但是学校对于家长和学生要诚实和透明。如果孩子在某事上没有做好那么我们应该开诚布公。
把失败的结果隐藏起来我们无法从中得到什么好处,好的结果才应该得到祝贺。
Julia Gillard还说她支持现在公立系统里A到E的学业评级制度,这个制度是由前任政府引入用来作为联邦教育拨款的一个条件。然而,现在学校可以自由选择自己的学生学业报告制度。
无论采取何种学生报告形式,重点是要让家长和学生清楚哪些方面孩子做的很好哪些方面仍然需要提高。
Secondary Principals Council的副主席Andrew Newman说,中学校长们不支持重新引入F级别(不及格),我们不想用“不及格“这个词,在学校教育环境里这个词对孩子的危害很大。
一些私校的校长们已经要求对于孩子过分关注的家长们,要允许孩子们“失败”并从错误和失望里学习到有价值的教训,而不要让孩子一直在压力中“成功”。
NSW Primary Principals Association的主席Geoff Scott说,强调建立学生自我意识的做法需要和现实能力的客观评价相平衡。我们不应该摒弃学生自我意识的概念,但是需要和现实自我概念平衡。
Geoff Scott说一些私校已经开始写信给家长们,告知家长要正确处理对于孩子在学校竞争方面的失败和失望,比如在竞争学校乐队的位置,竞选School Captain或者学业奖项方面。
当家长和老师面对这些事情的时候,要告诉学生:你做的很好,但是你正在把自己放在一个竞争的环境里,你要面对的是成功或者失败的结果。

Reality check: abandon false praise, principals say

PUBLIC schools will continue to avoid labelling children failures in school reports which grade students A to E, but principals believe it is time to abandon false praise and give students a more realistic impression of their abilities.
Jim McAlpine, president of the NSW Secondary Principals Council, said schools should praise students who ''achieve great things''.
''If they don't achieve as much as they should, there is no point giving them false praise,'' he said. ''They need to know they have to achieve to get the rewards.''
The Deputy Prime Minister, Julia Gillard, said while it could sometimes be difficult, it was better for schools to be honest and transparent with parents and students. ''If a child is failing then that should be made clear.
''There is nothing to be gained by hiding poor results. Good results should be celebrated.''
Ms Gillard said she supported the use of the A to E grading system which was mandated by the Howard government as a condition of education funding to the states. However, schools were now free to choose their method of reporting.
''Whatever the method it should be clear to parents and their kids where they are doing well and where they could do better,'' Ms Gillard said.
The deputy president of the Secondary Principals Council, Andrew Newman, said high school principals did not support the reintroduction of the F grade. ''We don't use the word failure,'' he said. ''In the context of working with kids, it is a harsh term,'' he said.
Some private school principals had urged overprotective parents to allow their children to fail and learn valuable lessons from their mistakes and disappointments, instead of putting them under constant pressure to be successful.
Geoff Scott, the president of the NSW Primary Principals Association, said the emphasis on building the self-esteem of students needed to be balanced with giving them a more realistic impression of their abilities. ''We shouldn't throw the self-esteem concept out the window, but we need to balance it with realistic self-concept,'' he said.
Mr Scott said some private schools had gone too far in sending letters to parents to prepare their children for the disappointment of missing out on a role in a school musical or being a school captain or prefect.
''When these situations come up it falls to parents and teachers to say you have a good qualities, you are putting yourself in a competitive market, face the fact that you might or might not be selected,'' Mr Scott said.
