Principals reject My School site
Dan Harrison
March 25, 2010 - 3:00AM
PARENTS may approve of the My School website but principals have given it a fail in a survey of more than 1000 school leaders.
The survey, commissioned by the Australian Education Union, reveals widespread dissatisfaction with the site, which publishes information such as test results, attendance rates and socio-economic profiles for each of the nation's schools.
More than 87 per cent of the 1166 public school principals who responded to the survey said they did not believe the website in its current form presented an accurate picture of school performance, while 89 per cent said they believed it was wrong to launch the site before details of the income and resources of every school were available.
More than a quarter of principals said they believed information published about their school on the site was not correct.
Almost 90 per cent said the index used to group schools serving similar student populations was not a valid way of determining which schools were similar. Most principals believed the index value assigned to their school to be inaccurate.
More than 60 per cent of principals said public comparisons of school results on My School would lead to a greater emphasis on preparation for national literacy and numeracy tests.
Of these principals, 81 per cent said the greater emphasis on test preparation would be at the expense of other areas of teaching and learning.
More than a third of principals said their school had been listed in a league table since the website was launched in January. More than half of these principals said being ranked would have a negative effect on their students, while 68 per cent said the ranking would hurt their staff.
Principals who said their schools had been listed towards the bottom of a league table were more likely to say they had experienced teacher shortages, and more likely to say teacher shortages were becoming worse.
The federal president of the Australian Education Union, Angelo Gavrielatos, said league tables compiled from data on the site had led to students being bullied and taunted, and had made it more difficult for some schools to retain teachers.
The union's leadership will consider the survey findings at a meeting of its federal executive in Canberra today.
The union has threatened to boycott this year's national literacy and numeracy tests, held in May, unless the Deputy Prime Minister, Julia Gillard, takes action to prevent the publication of league tables.
Ms Gillard said the government believed parents should have the information on My School and would build on it over time, including with financial data later this year.
''The AEU has made their position on My School very clear a number of times now,'' she said.
''Parents have made their position very clear as well. They've voted with their fingertips and visited the My School web site to get rich information about their kids' school.''
''As we have said we do not support the publication of meaningless league tables and My School was designed to avoid presenting information in this way.''

My School
