PANEL: PARENTS IN ACTION
Session descriptions:
Issues in raising children bilingually
Susanne Döpke will offer information on how bilingualism influences a child’s development and what parents and other carers can do to help the child speak both languages. The session will be of interest to parents just starting out as well as those who are wondering if they are doing the right thing or who have to defend themselves against criticism. It will also support professionals who are dealing with bilingual families.
Enhancing the language experience in the community and at school: what you need to know
This session is for parents, carers and teachers who have attended previous Raising Children In More Than One Language seminars and are interested in fostering language learning in playgroups, schools, etc…. It is designed to provide parents with the knowledge and tools to maximize language success outside the home.
Recognising the child’s own needs in the language and maximising the advantages from grandparents and the world outside the home
This talk will address parents of older children (late primary/early secondary age). Michael Clyne will discuss how parents and grandparents can encourage children to use the community language by finding uses of special interest to them. He will also consider the need to take into account children’s personality - urge to excel, conform or be different, interest in languages, motivation to merely communicate.
In addition he will discuss how community resources, school language programs and overseas visits and even grandparents all potentially boost language maintenance and development but can sometimes have an adverse effect.
Practical suggestions for helping your child learn your language
Susanne Döpke will give examples of practical strategies, which ensure the development of the community language and prevent or solve difficulties. This will include supporting the child’s first steps into language, as well as strategies, games and resources for the older pre-school child. This session will be of interest to parents of toddlers and pre-school children as well as professionals advising parents.
Panel: Parents in action
Speakers on the panel will include parents active in fostering bilingualism in children. They will be answering questions and discussing ways that parents can be more active in promoting bilingualism with their children.
