the US ISM manufacturing index fell sharply in August from 51.2 to 49.1, the first sub-50 reading since August 2016 and the lowest since January 2016.
The headline index came in well below consensus expectation of 51.3 and our more bearish estimate of 50.5.
The deterioration in sentiment was broad-based with notable decreases in new orders and employment. New orders fell 3.6 pts to 47.2 and new export orders dropped 4.8 pts to 43.3, the worst readings for both indexes since the Great Recession in 2009.
