en, as per policy, all foreigners have to register even you only stay for a day, but not much people do that. in your case, because you need to extend your kid's visa, you have to register at police station. but I am not sure how long your kid has been in china, they only give you a term (21days?? cannot remember) to notice them otherwise will be fined (i was fined). try going to police station asap.
