You may have noticed the NSW State Government crowing about the new swathe of Marine Parks they plan to introduce between Newcastle and Wollongong.
On face value one would think this is a great idea and will solve the problems facing the marine environment. Unfortunately however (like most green politics) it’s tokenistic rubbish that will do next to nothing to protect the fishery and the environment.
These proposed sanctuaries lock out recreational anglers but let’s be clear, it’s not dads and their sons sitting in a tinny or by the side of a river wetting a line on a Saturday morning that’s the problem. In fact recreational anglers have next to nothing to do with the health of the fishery. Remember that recreational fishing is highly selective where anglers pluck a few fish out of the ocean while returning unwanted fish (by-catch) to the water alive. There’s strict size and bag limits to protect from over-fishing and quite frankly it all works pretty well.
The ‘problem’ (by which I mean the real threats to the marine environment and the fishery) are much more serious and far reaching including issues such as runoff, pollution and exploitation by commercial fishers. The problem is that the Government does not want to address the real environmental issues because that would be difficult and expensive. It’s far easier and far cheaper is to draw some arbitrary lines on a map and pretend this is a solution.
Recreational fishers are being made a scapegoat and being punished for no valid reason. Let’s also put a lid on the ‘problem’ that necessitates these draconian lock-outs which in actual fact does not exist. There’s a shit ton of fish out there. I suck at fishing and I can catch them pretty easily. They are not rare and not endangered. It’s not that bad! I know this because I have been fishing Sydney for most of my 50 years and the fishery is in great shape.
Let’s take a look at Kingfish. This species are not the smartest fish in the ocean and the commercial sector worked out that with floating traps they could catch them by the ton and systematically wiped them out. For years you never heard of anyone catching a Kingy … until the traps were banned. In a few short years the ocean was once again teeming with them and (here’s the kicker) recreational fishers go their hardest but fail to put the slightest dent in the population. Instituting Marine Parks and locking out recreational fishers will do nothing while sensible controls and regulations governing the commercial sector works wonders. So why are we being targeted?
So let’s put this to bed now. Setting aside sanctuary areas with commercial trawlers patrolling the perimeter will do nothing because (wait for it) the fish are not privy to the map nor do they recognise the boundaries. It’s 不雅ing dumb.
But why would the Government remove the civil rights and anger one million recreational fishers/voters in NSW? Surely this is electoral suicide? The answer is our political system and I’ll take a moment to explain because this is important (and it’s not boring I promise):
Our political system has two houses of parliament, a mechanism designed to prevent one individual or party having absolute power. Each house of parliament is determined by a different voting method, a system of geographic ‘seats’ in the lower house and total state-wide vote in the upper house. What this means is the Government (the party with the majority in the lower house) rarely has a majority in the upper house. This means to get anything done, the Government of the day has to negotiate with the holders of the balance of power which is (wait for it) The Greens.
So all this Marine Park bullshit is simply a result of horse trading in the dark back rooms of parliament house at Macquarie St. The major parties don’t give two 不雅s about the environment, this is simply a by-product of deals done with The Greens so they pass other unrelated bills in the Legislative Council. The bottom line is that you and your kids are being locked out of your favourite fishing spots because YOUR government has sold out to the extreme greens.
There is also the case of vested interests. Animal rights groups (shut up unless you are vegan) and the extremist greens all lobby Government with their anti-fishing agenda as well as those such as scuba divers who have an ulterior motive to selfishly secure a currently shared resource for themselves. These noisy minorities are permanently in the ear of Government pushing their agenda while the majority sits idle.
Please write or make an appointment to see your local state MP. Make it clear that this issue alone will determine your vote in the next election. In the meantime get your kids off the X-Box and take them fishing, while you still can.

If Shooters Farmers and Fishers Party has more seats than the Greens then this wouldn't have happened in the first place. But the fact of the real world is we are the minority.

1,Most of Lockouts are very safe spots, and the ban will push the inexperienced fishermen out to sea or dangerous fishing spots and place them in dangerous or life threatening situations.
2,The Lockouts of recreational fishing have nothing to do with the protection of marine life, and Recs only rank 17 of potential damage to marine life and environment according to the Lockouts' related proposal.
3,All of the Lockouts are the great platforms for kids, families and friends to enjoy the sun and the coast, not Video games at home.
4,The license fee of millions of fisho can help to improve the environment for the marine life. The government should focus on the resolve of commercial over-fishing and pollution.
