Chile: Tsunami warnings issued after 8.3 magnitude earthquake

Please be advised of the following development(s) that may impact your travellers and/or travel programme:
A tsunami warning has been issued for Chile after an 8.3 magnitude earthquake hit the coast off Chile’s capital, Santiago. Authorities have issued evacuation orders on parts of the coast from Puerto Aysen to Arica. Tsunami waves have been reported off shore at Coquimbo, approximately 160km from the epicentre of the earthquake. The Pacific Tsunami Warning Centre has stated that waves of between 1 and 3 metres above normal tide level are possible along some coastlines in French Polynesia. Smaller waves are possible in numerous other South America, Central America and Pacific facing coastlines. Warnings are frequently issued as a precaution and are updated regularly or withdrawn shortly after being issued. It has been reported that at least three people have been killed, whilst several others injured by the quake.
Chile is located in a seismically active region and earthquakes are regularly reported. There is a subsequent risk of tsunamis in areas situated along the country’s western coastline. Further aftershocks are possible in the coming hours and days. These may result in further disruptions to telecommunications and utilities in the affected regions. Disruptions to road travel and business operations in the affected area should be anticipated.
Due to the possibility of further earthquakes and/or aftershocks in the affected area, clients are advised to take the necessary precautions. Clients operating in Pacific-facing states, particularly those located near Chile, are advised to monitor local media channels for updates, advisories and directives from the authorities.
