TROUT SEASON OPENS THIS WEEKEND
Victoria’s rivers and streams will be open for trout fishing from this weekend, Minster Responsible for Fisheries Joe Helper announced today.
Mr Helper said the opening weekend of the trout season was always popular – and like last year – the Goulburn River will be boosted with extra trout leading up to and after the opening weekend to give Victorian fishers an even better chance to catch one.
“Fishing is not only an important recreational pastime but it also play a vital role to the economies of many regional communities,” Mr Helper said.
“The recreational fishing industry helps contribute to more than 5000 jobs and is worth more than $820 million to the Victorian economy.
“The opening of the trout season is clear evidence of the interest in recreational fishing, particularly around northern Victoria.”
Mr Helper said there is a regular four-month closed season for trout that allows the mature fish to spawn and protects stock of the fish in many waterways.
“As part of a $13.5 million commitment to improve recreational fishing opportunities in Victoria, last year the Brumby Labor Government introduced a three-year trout stocking program in the Goulburn River,” he said.
“This included releasing more than 2300 brown and rainbow trout, all of catchable size, into the iconic waterway in the last 12 months.
“This program will boost fishing opportunities in the Goulburn for all recreational fishers.”
Mr Helper said this year’s trout season also included a BIG FI$H Competition where lucky anglers fishing in the Murrindindi and Mitchell Shires would have a chance to win $50,000.
“Most anglers don’t need incentives to pursue their passion but the lure of $50,000 for those who catch tagged fish in the Goulburn River or Lake Eildon will be an added bonus,” he said.
“These regions have suffered from bushfires in recent years and rely heavily on income from visiting anglers. This is a great event to encourage anglers back to the region.”
