Queen Street turns into a giant sports park fora free family sports day - Sunday 19th February
Dear friends and family,
For the last 18 months I have been involved with a small team in organising aunique event on Queen St called Playing in the Streets. I would love it if you, your family and friends were able to come along. It would also be great if youcould forward this email onto ten friends and family to get the word out. Allof our time on this event has been voluntary and our marketing budget ispartially relying on word of mouth, so please forward on if possible. If youlive outside of Auckland, it would be great if you could make it, or forward topeople you know in Auckland.
For the first time ever we are turning Auckland's main street into a giantcar-free sports park. The event is to be held between Customs and Wyndhamstreets on Sunday 19th February, starting at 10am. Aucklanders areencouraged to bring their families and friends, to put on their shorts andtrainers, and come and take part, whatever their age or sporting ability toplay on Queen Street.
At this free family event, everyone will have a chance to try their hand at alarge range of sports including football, squash, cricket, badminton, netball, gym skills, cycling, zumba, aerobics and more. Check out the attached programmewhich tells you whats on where and when. There will be demonstration games, experts on hand to give tips, free bike maintenance, as well as contests andcompetitions. All of Queen Street’s favourite shops and eateries will be open, and there will be picnic spots on the street, so families are able to make aday of it.
The event was inspired by international cities such as Bogota, New York andCopenhagen which have successfully opened streets to people rather than carsover the last twenty years. The aim of the event is to create a space forplaying sport in the city for children, young people and adults, drawing peopleinto the heart of the city and thus building relationships between youngpeople, the city and its businesses. The intention is to demonstrate thesocial, cultural, environmental and economic benefits by providing a newdestination for Aucklanders in the city on a Sunday. It is hoped that this willbe the first of many future events where people can play in Queen Street. So comealong and make it a huge success.
Check 1ZB from 8am on the day in case of adverse weather. The rain date for theevent is Sunday 26th February.
