I chose the film which called “Beijing Rocks”. This film is the urban and youth film which is directed by Mabel Cheung, starred by Shu Qi, Geng Le and Daniel Wu. This film tells the story that some people who like music get together and struggle for their dream.
“Beijing Rocks” is trying to convey about the experiences of young people in a complex, modern urban setting. There are 3 main roles in this film, Ping Lu, Mi Gao and Yang Ying. They all have their dreams and their own experience. Ping Lu is a singer who loves Rock and Roll from other city struggle in Beijing. He tried a lot of methods to organize his band, Moon Band and he tried to make people love his music but the truth always hurt him. There is one scene in this film that Ping Lu brought his production of Rock and Roll to music production company and tried to sign a contract with them. But they were not satisfied with his production and even humiliate Ping Lu. After that, Ping Lu destroyed his production. Another scene of Ping Lu is that he found his dog was lost, then he was so heart-broken and even thought everything belong to him were lost. In this scene, he said “ I was trying to playing Rock and Roll hardly, but Rock and Roll plays me”. At the end of this film, Ping Lu was crashed by a truck, when he stood up, he took out his tape and said “ listen this, next song will be better. ”, and then he died. Yang Ying is a dancer from countryside who is very active and traitorous. She likes to follow something very dangerous. And even she said “she knows 100 types of way of death, one of these is to marry a man who loves Rock and Roll, painful and fast.”. Mi Gao, a singer-songwriter from Hong Kong, stayed in Beijing because he fight in pools room. Mi Gao was attracted deeply by their love of music and he followed them to perform in different places. One scene of Mi Gao is that his father and him drank with some officers, these officers humiliated his father and him, but they still smiled to them.
These roles all have their own personal feature, the experience of these roles represents the situation of Chinese Rock and Roll. By describing the status and feature of these roles, this film successfully expresses that it is hard and tough for young people to achieve their dream. At the end, Geng Le died, but his song was accepted by many people. It also tells us that although young people will suffer difficulties and pain, they should not give up, you will success. This film is a successful movie which is about youth, it `conveys that how difficult a young man want achieve his dream in a complex, modern urban setting.
