26,000 Toyotas recalled over airbag fault
Toyota is recalling 26,050 cars in New Zealand over a possible airbag fault that's already been linked to at least five deaths worldwide.
The New Zealand recalls are part of a worldwide recall of over five million Toyotas which have been fitted with airbags from one of the world's biggest air-bag companies Takata.
Takata supplies airbags to a number of manufacturers, including Toyota's rival Nissan which has also been forced to call back 1.56 million vehicles worldwide over the fault.
Toyota New Zealand's tracking the owners of the affected vehicles through registration data and will be getting in touch.
More than 20,000 Corolla, Picnic and Yaris models manufactured between 2001 and 2007, and another 3122 Yaris and 2760 RAV4 models manufactured between 2003 and 2005, will be affected by the recall.
The company's also investigating how many second-hand imported cars could be affected.
About 20 million cars produced by major carmakers have already been recalled over the defect which has been linked to at least five deaths, including one in the United States that was initially investigated as a homicide due to the driver's grisly injuries.
But Toyota NZ's general manager of customer services Spencer Morris said there hadn't been injuries in New Zealand.
"Toyota New Zealand is not aware of any incidents in New Zealand where airbags in the vehicles affected by the recall might have deployed abnormally in an accident," he said.
