Where Victoria’s new cases of coronavirus are coming from

Victoria has recorded 77 new coronavirus cases overnight and a record-high number of community transmissions.
Victoria’s Chief Health Officer Brett Sutton told reporters today there were now close to 87 outbreaks across the state.
Overnight there were 31 cases with an unknown source that point to community transmission. This is the highest number of cases since the pandemic began.
In total there have been 332 cases in the state with an unknown source.
Active cases also increased, rising by 45 overnight, for a total of 415 active cases.
Prof Sutton said five previous cases had been reclassified so there was a net increase of 72 cases in the state.
“Perhaps not unexpectedly, there are now 20 patients hospitalised, an increase of five since yesterday, including four in intensive care, which is an increase of two,” he said.
About 26,320 tests have been done since yesterday for a total of 856,591 tests.
Prof Sutton gave a breakdown of where the cases have came from:
• 13 were linked to outbreaks;
• 37 detected through routine testing;
• No new cases in hotel quarantine; and
• 27 further cases are under investigation.
Prof Sutton said the new cases were “largely in the hot zones” but not exclusively.

“Some of those cases – and they’re a minority – are outside those so-called hot zones,” he said.
But with the restrictions now in force he said people should be limiting their movement.
When asked how many clusters there were in the state, Prof Sutton said: “The total number of outbreaks, cumulative, I think, is close to 87”.
The new cases include:
• 2 cases linked to Al Taqwa College;
• 5 to Albanvale Primary School; and
• 1 case to Stamford Plaza Hotel;
A new outbreak has also been identified among a Roxburgh Park family in Melbourne’s north. There are now known to be about 20 people linked to this outbreak across eight households.
While today’s numbers are the highest in three months, they appear to show Victoria’s coronavirus cases are stabilising. Yesterday there were 73 cases and on Monday there were 75 cases, which was previously the highest number of new cases since March 31.
“I get some comfort from stabilisation in numbers, but it is never an easy place to sit when you’ve got 415 active cases, all of which are infectious,” Prof Sutton said.
“Obviously, we’ve identified them. They’re in isolation. Their close contact are in quarantine, but it’s an indication of a very large number of people who have acquired it, which means there are other infections still to be found out there and they’re all at risk of transmitting to others if we’re not doing the right thing.
“So the restrictions are in place, even though they apply to those restricted postcodes. We need to bear in mind that it’s something for all of us to do, especially across Melbourne, but really the whole of Victoria.”
Prof Sutton was asked whether he thought the strain of coronavirus in Melbourne was more virulent than in other places like Sydney?
“I don’t think there’s any evidence that it’s more virulent,” he said.
“I think the evidence we have from overseas where there’s more transmission or faster transmission really related to how people are behaving and the cohort of the population that are infected. I don’t think it’s a feature of the virus at all.”
