Mosquitoes help to beat disease
Australian scientists claim to have halted the spread of dengue fever after releasing specially bred mosquitoes. Dengue fever is a viral infection that causes flu-like symptoms and can be deadly. It is spread when a female Aedes aegypti or Aedes
albopictus mosquito bites someone who already has the virus. When it bites someone else it passes the dengue virus on to them.
Researchers from Monash
University in Melbourne, Australia, bred mosquitoes that contain a common bacterium called Wolbachia, which lives inside the cells of insects. This bacteria stops the dengue virus from making copies of itself inside mosquitoes. Since the virus can’t replicate, the insects don’t give it to other humans.
The specially bred mosquitoes were released in the Australian city of Townsville in 2014, where they mated with local mosquitoes. Their offspring carried the same naturally occurring Wolbachia bacteria. The town has been dengue fever-free since the mosquitoes were first released.

Deploying mosquitoes stops dengue outbreaks
The first large-scale deployment of mosquitoes infected with Wolbachia bacteria, which makes them unable to transmit viruses, has stopped all outbreaks of dengue fever in a city in northern Australia for the last four years. The success of the project in Townsville, Queensland, will encourage hopes that Wolbachia can provide a knockout blow against the Zika virus in Brazil as well, where the mosquitoes have been introduced into the favelas of Rio de Janeiro. Until now, the technology has only been tried in small pilot projects. Townsville, however, with 187,000 inhabitants, is on a much larger scale. Mosquitoes specially bred to carry Wolbachia, which occurs naturally in up to 60% of insects, were let loose over 66 sq km of the city.
