"I think Christchurch is the next big leaky homes crisis," Katie says. "In 10 years I think there are going to be major quality issues."
And it's not just Christchurch.
In Hamilton and Rotorua over the past few years, complaints of shoddy workmanship have prompted council warnings of a crackdown. Unprofessional practices included sleeping on building sites and employing illegal workers.
And this week, some of my colleagues spent time exploring massive new housing estates on the fringes of south Auckland. Again, they told me, this is the next leaky homes disaster, its magnitude just waiting to be revealed. Wonky walls, shoddy brickwork, building debris dumped in the once pristine waterways.
Today, we reveal the story of Jonathan Sommers, a Kiwi with no background in building, accused of taking millions and fleeing the country leaving distraught families living in "empty shells".
At its simplest, the problem is one of supply and demand. In Christchurch it's the quake rebuild; in Auckland, and to a lesser extent Queenstown and Tauranga, it's the population boom.
The best builders are in short supply and can name their price. And the door is wide open to the cowboys and the clowns, whether they are locals or crews shipped in from parts of Asia.
