The Government has signalled the go-ahead for the Auckland council to build 9500 more new homes across the city to help solve its "housing challenges".
Housing Minister Nick Smith and Mayor Len Brown today announced a second batch of 11 special housing areas.
The first batch of 11 special housing areas for 6000 homes was announced in October.
"We are building real momentum towards increasing the supply of housing in Auckland," Smith said .
Adding the new special housing areas was "good progress" toward the target of 39,000 new homes, he said.
From Friday applications for subdivisions will be considered by the council under the fast-tracked law. It requires approvals within six months for greenfield developments and three months for brownfield developments.
"There is a power of work to be done to bring these thousands of new homes to market," Smith said.
"The subdivisions and houses will need to be designed, consented and built. The big gain with the declaration of these special housing areas is that the land zoning that would have historically taken years has been done in a few weeks.
"Alongside freeing up land supply, the Government is passing a law to rein in council development charges, proposing to introduce more transparency and competition into the builders materials market, investing in skills and productivity in the construction sector and supporting first-home buyers by expanding the Welcome Home Loans and KiwiSaver First Home Deposit Subsidy schemes."
Work on construction would need to be stepped up in 2014, Smith said.
He aims to announce a third batch of special housing areas in March.
The new special housing areas include:
Belmont, Pukekohe - 720 homes
Clinker Place and Thom St, New Lynn - 780 homes
George Tce, Onehunga - 50 homes
Hingaia - 2500 homes
Khyber Pass Rd, Newmarket - 50 homes
Lake Pupuke Drive, Takapuna - 70 homes
Northern Tamaki, Tamaki - 1800 homes
Royal Rd, Massey - 108 homes
Scott Pt, Hobsonville - 2592 homes
Silverdale - 876 homes
Trent St, Avondale - 29 homes

New homes tipped to cool Auckland market
Property experts say the Government's plans for another 10,000 new homes across Auckland should help ease housing affordability problems - despite some of them being built in expensive spots such as Takapuna.
Housing Minister Nick Smith revealed plans yesterday for fast-tracked housing developments in 11 locations, including 2500 homes near Papakura, 1800 in Tamaki and more than 2500 in Hobsonville.
