I have a 12cbm goods to be sent from Shanghai to Melbourne port. The goods are FOB. I asked the supplier to get a shipping company to quote me a price, and then the supplier told me it is free (only for limited time).
It seems catchy for a sea shipment to be free. The freight agent claims that the situation is bad in China and they want to offer this to win business and goodwill (since they have some goods going out and they have some space left, and my goods is only 12cbm).
Hence my question:
Goods are FOB. When i get the goods, I will appoint my usual freight company to clear at local port. In my case, is there any catch? Does it seem strange somewhere (for freight to be free).

not for you unless you get something in wring from the coloader.
you will get invoiced anyway when the goods come.

I think you are right....
they will likely slap me with high port fees to cover for the "free" shipping right? But will they charge me an extremely high port fees? How do I protect myself from that happening?

没有什么好奇怪的, 就为为了货运公司掐死对方, 可是大家都是天朝自己的企业, 谁也掐不死。
以前还有倒贴钱的呢

是的 , 现在我不清楚, 有一点时间是0运费的, 去日本的航线还贴钱呢。
port charge 应该是正常的收费, 你叫他们给你一个完整的报价。
或者多对比一下

很正常 以前遇到过,知识特定的航线和特定的时间. 没考虑过为什么 大概想一下,原因有2:
1,班轮运输,这种方式是4固定一负责,所以如果没货或者货不多,肯定航线还是要跑的,所以有的关系的货代可能能拿到免费舱位.
2,经济不景气的时候船公司之间肯定也是剑拔弩张,固定航线来回都要跑的,就跟拉货的车一样,单趟赚了钱回来少点钱照样拉.
