[size=1em]The first of the Government's fleet of aging 2008 BMW limousines goes under the hammer today and if you have at least a spare $100,000 burning a hole in your pocket, one could be yours.
[size=1em]Thirty-four BMW 730LD cars will be progressively disposed of through tenders, brokered deals and public auctions through Turners Auctions over the next few months.
[size=1em]Turners Auctions chief operating officer Todd Hunter told Fairfax media the cars had done between 45,000 and 90,000 kilometres and sold for $170,000 new.
[size=1em]"Because of who they've been transporting and what they've been doing that creates something different and special about these cars," Mr Hunter said.
[size=1em]Some of the existing fleet will be held back to provide operational flexibility during the period of the Rugby World Cup, when it is expected there will be higher demand for limousine transport services from VIPs of other countries.
[size=1em]Peter Murray, deputy chief executive, shared services at the Department of Internal Affairs, said the Department was replacing the BMW 730LD 2008 fleet with a new fleet of 2011 cars.
[size=1em]"We considered a range of options for disposal and decided to sell the cars through Turners Auctions. It is the best option because it ensures an open and transparent sales process; we expect higher buyer interest, and importantly, value for the taxpayer by gaining the best return."
[size=1em]"The BMW 730LD was chosen in 2008 as the new Crown fleet because it offered advantages, including fuel efficiency, low emissions, safety rating, comfort, security and other fit for purpose features," Mr Murray said.
